My Noteworthy Interaction

Over the course of the project, I had many noteworthy social interactions. That was probably the best feature of the online community. Having random social interactions with players around the world, especially when my headset was on. The most prominent interaction was early on in the project when I played someone from Germany. I knew he was from Germany because that was the team he played with and he also used his own virtual pro. My opponent’s virtual pro resembles a stereotypical German person, so I assumed he was indeed from Germany. Both of us had our microphones on and it resulted in back and fourth trash talk between us. It reached a level where I thought I was playing a friend of mine right next to me. Generally, playing in person against friends is much more competitive in nature then playing against random users online. However, this instance was different. I felt like my opponent and I were rivals and the intensity was in the air.

At the end of the first half, I was down 2-0. Not a good sign when going into halftime and I thought the game was over. Nonetheless, my opponent would not stop insulting me and my country, the United States of America. In turn, this fired me up and I would not allow myself to lose against this opponent. I came through in the second half and scored an early goal. I was back in the game. The game reached finally reached the 90th minute and I thought my opponent had it in the bag. Somehow in the final seconds of the game, I kept my composure and scored a last second goal to take the game to overtime. We decided to utlize the golden goal option in overtime and luckily I scored a early minute goal to win the game. I was ecstatic and could not stop cheering. When I finally calmed down, I trash talked and came up with any stereotypical German phrase I could think of; it was not a pretty site. Although I had a great time rubbing in the victory, communication is not vital to the online community and thus not a strong aspect of the game.

Fifa 12′ Competition

My favorite thing about playing Fifa has always been playing against my friends in either one versus one or two versus two matches in person. We always get very competitive, hostile, and sometimes even put money on the line. It is a big social interaction  between my friends and I. The game allows our competitive natures to come out full-throttle. By doing this practicum project, I was able to play soccer matches online against opponents I will never meet in person and/or some of my friends in different parts of the world who have and play Fifa online. Essentially, Xbox live is a massive multiplayer online network designed to bring people together and create an interactive gaming experience. There are tens of thousands of players online at all times playing video games and Fifa 12′ is just one of the many online communities.

The first thing I noticed when I started to play online was that my level of skill was not as high I thought it was. Instantly, I knew that the level of competition was much greater online in comparison to what I am use to(friends and artificial intelligence). My first few matches I was slower then usual and I lost frequently. Yet, this edition of Fifa made match ups online more fluid and comprehensive. The major change is that now you choose your team, and setup your team before searching, and get put straight into a game. Then it searches for an ideal candidate that your ranking closely resembles within the same division and level. For instance, if I am in Division 8, I will only play other opponents in Division 8. Additionally, if I am level 13 it will match me up against players relatively close to level 13. Both division and level have to coincide for a match. Before, matches would be unfair and I would be set against an opponent who is much better then me. This solves the problem and shows how effective the online network is at rivaling players against each other. Nonetheless, it is not perfect and sometimes does not match up players correctly, but that is inevitable with such innovative technology. I am sure in the future this problem will diminish.

Fifa 12′ Avatar

The first thing I did to start this practicum project was make my an account for Xbox live. After signing up for Xbox live, every user is given an avatar, a digital representation of the user. I honestly did not care to customize mine to personify myself online, but many people like this aspect. I did the bare minimum of work with my avatar because I just wanted to go online and start playing soccer matches. Nonetheless, the feature on Xbox live is a great and quite innovative because it allows users to represent themselves online and give themselves an identity. With every avatar, a user can customize just about anything, ranging from: skin color, hair color, accessories, facial hair, size, weight, apparel, etc. These avatars are more for the user’s Xbox live profile, not for the Fifa online network. Fifa 12’, instead, has a feature called Virtual pro.

Virtual pro is basically the same concept of an avatar, but it is catered for the online Fifa community. I created a virtual pro that is an on-pitch version of myself that can be embedded online into matches with my favorite club, FC Barcelona. It entitles people to set their appearance, style of play, and a number of other details that set themselves, the footballer, apart from the rest of the online community. So when I am playing someone from Europe or Asia, if they are using their virtual pro it can help me see their true identity. The best part is that you’ll be controlling your Virtual Pro across all of the online modes, earning experience and upgrading his stats at all times. Over time, my virtual pro has improved and I can use him with whichever team I play with. The biggest concern for me is that I do not actually know if the digital representation is reliable of my opponent. It is not a big issue, but people can always be deceitful and misrepresent themselves in the virtual community.

Fifa 12′ Progress

I knew when I started this project that it would be easy to play Fifa online for at least 15 hours because I am an avid video game player, especially with Fifa. Accordingly, I amassed much more then 15 hours online, mainly because I played before I started this project. I probably played around 25 hours and 100 matches. Each match is 12 minutes, six minutes a half and this allotted time does not account for signing up and registering for Xbox live. By the time I presented my project I was in Division 5 and level 8. The way to move up online is by playing matches and earning experience points (XP). In addition, users can play challenges and earn rewards, such as maintaining possession over 70%.  After moving up one level, it gets more difficult to move up toward the next level. The big drawback of the XP system is that there is a daily cap of how much you can earn. Once you reach the cap, you have to wait until the next day to continue earning XP. Thus, ranking is based more on persistence then it is on skill. This way, online users play longer and receive more replay value of the game overall because the easiest way to move up the ranks is by playing more matches. To be honest, I am in the middle of the pack of Fifa players online, which I hope will change in the future. It seems that there are people in the world that do not stop playing Fifa online, or offline for that matter. Those are the players that I cannot compete with, but I know I shouldn’t be able to unless I was playing at least four hours a day, seven days a week.

In comparison, when I play with my friends in person, I am usually in the top tier . I am more proud to be one of the best players within my group of friends because I can talk trash and never let it go until I lose, of course. Generally, playing friends in person is much more competitive then playing online and more exhilarating. In addition, we can play two versus two when online that is not possible. Players online have one goal: to reach the highest ranking, in contrast when I play friends it is more about pride.

Fifa 12′ Game Play

The game play of Fifa 12′ is impeccable. I have never played a game so realistic that I feel like I am actually at a soccer game. The graphics are incredible and truly display how players look in real life and their style of play. In this year’s game, EA sports changed how defense is played to make the game play more difficult and keep past users wanting more. Online, the game play and graphics are the same as playing offline. However, one distinction I noticed was that at times online, the game play and graphics were slow due to the connection strength of my network or of my opponents. During various games the match would end abruptly because the connection was lost. This was definitely my biggest pet peeve about playing on Xbox Live, but it did not deter my enjoyment. Although, if I was losing at the time the connection was lost, it would result in a loss for my stats and lower my ranking online. It was a nuisance, but it would only occur about one out of every 10 games. When playing offline, these issues would never occur, but at the same time the artificial intelligence difficulty is nowhere near players online. Thus, I would always go back to playing online because the competition was higher and I always wanted to show I was the best at Fifa. In the end, that was my goal more so then the social interaction of playing online with random users, to be the best.

The biggest addition to this year’s game is the support your club feature. I set my favorite club as FC Barcelona and the feature is very reminiscent of playing fantasy sports online. I can track the club and players online, not in real life. By playing matches with my club I can increase the club’s prestige and I can also track the progress of my friends online. Another great feature is the online friendlies. This aspect allows me to play against my friends like a head-to-head feature. This gives a level of continuity between friendly matches, and will undoubtedly add that extra excitement in matches between my friends.
